With the participation of Prof. Sabah Qasim Khalaf, Dean of the College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences at University of Baghdad and Chairman of the Committee of Deans of Physical Education Colleges in Iraq, the fourth meeting of the National Strategy Committee for Developing Iraqi Sports (2026–2036) was held today, Tuesday (26 August 2025). The meeting was chaired by Dr. Hassan Al-Hasnawi, Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, with the membership of Prime Minister’s advisors Dr. Khalid Kubian and Dr. Iyad Bunnan.
The meeting discussed the key pillars of the national strategy, which include: developing sports infrastructure, enhancing Iraq’s international sporting status, diversifying funding sources, reforming and organizing legislation and internal regulations, advancing sports media and specialized institutions, and strengthening human resource development.
It was agreed to approach these pillars in an integrated manner to establish a unified vision and a comprehensive strategy that ensures effective implementation across various areas of Iraqi sports. The committee emphasized promoting a culture of sports participation, rejecting racism, fostering social cohesion, investing in sports tourism, adopting governance, building international relations, and enhancing sports training capabilities to achieve higher levels of international competition.
This initiative supports the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Good Health and Well-being, Quality Education, Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, and Partnerships for the Goals.
